About Allied Health Professions

The professions of medical laboratory technology, medical radiation technology, and respiratory therapy became regulated health professions in Prince Edward Island on May 1, 2021. All technologists and therapists practising in those fields in the province must be registered with the College of Allied Health Professionals of PEI.

Medical Laboratory Technology

Medical laboratory technology is the health profession in which a person applies particular knowledge, skills and judgment in:

  • Performing laboratory investigations on the human body or specimens taken from the human body,
  • Interpreting and evaluating quality control data to verify the accuracy and precision of the results of laboratory investigations, and
  • Conducting research, education, management or administrative activities incidental to performing the above-mentioned services.

Registered health professionals specializing in medical laboratory technology may use the titles medical laboratory technologist (MLT) or registered medical laboratory technologist (RMLT) in their designations.

Medical Radiation Technology

Medical radiation technology is the health profession in which a person applies particular knowledge, skills and judgment in:

  • Using ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, magnetic fields, high-frequency sound waves and other energy forms in the provision of diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, and
  • Conducting research, education, management or administrative activities incidental to the above.

Registered medical radiation technologists (MRTs) may use the following titles in their designations, based on the discipline in which they specialize:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging - MRT(MR)
  • Nuclear medicine - MRT(N)
  • Radiation therapy - MRT(T)
  • Radiography - MRT(R)

Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory therapy is the health profession in which a person applies particular knowledge, skills and judgment in:

  • Providing diagnostic, assessment and therapeutic modalities to assist in the management of cardio-respiratory and related disorders and to achieve optimal respiratory health, wellness and functional performance, and
  • Conducting research, education, management or administrative activities incidental to the above.

The designations of a respiratory therapist include registered respiratory therapist and RRT.
