Professional Currency Requirements

Allied health professionals applying to get registered with CAHPPEI must demonstrate currency of professional knowledge and skills before becoming a general registrant.

General registrants must demonstrate their professional currency when renewing their registration as well.

Applicants must meet the following requirements immediately preceding the date of the application or general registration renewal:

Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs)

MLTs must have one of the following within the four years immediately preceding the date of the application or general registration renewal:

  • Completion of the educational requirements;
  • Active practice of medical laboratory technology without any restrictions for at least 900 hours; or
  • Completion of a refresher program in medical laboratory technology approved by the registrar.

Medical Radiation Technologists (MRTs)

Currency requirements, primary discipline

MRTs must have one of the following within the three years immediately preceding the date of the application or general registration renewal for their primary discipline:

  • Completion of the educational requirements with a primary focus on the applicant's primary discipline;
  • Active practice in the applicant's primary discipline without any restrictions for at least 600 hours; or
  • Completion of a refresher program in the applicant's primary discipline, approved by the registrar.

Currency requirements, secondary discipline

MRTs must have one of the following within the three years immediately preceding the date of the application or general registration renewal for their secondary discipline:

  • Completion of the educational requirements with a secondary focus on the applicant's secondary discipline;
  • Active practice in the secondary discipline without any restrictions for at least 160 hours; or
  • Completion of a refresher program in the secondary discipline, approved by the registrar.

Respiratory Therapists (RTs)

RTs must have one of the following within the four years immediately preceding the date of the application or general registration renewal:

  • Completion of the educational requirements;
  • Active practice of respiratory therapy without any restrictions for at least 1,500 hours; or
  • Completion of a refresher program in respiratory therapy approved by the registrar.
